Asus ROG Ally X officially revealed with many improvements

Asus has unveiled the ROG Ally X, focusing on improvements like battery life, storage, RAM and more that are promising for gamers.

Asus has officially unveiled the ROG Ally X handheld gaming PC, promising major improvements in key areas like battery life, storage, RAM, and more. The latest model will serve as a mid-cycle refresh for the current Asus ROG Ally, rather than a complete upgrade for the next generation, and gamers can already pre-order it.

Launching in 2023, ROG Ally is Asus’ answer to Valve’s hugely popular Steam Deck handheld gaming PC. Equipped with the more powerful AMD Ryz1 chipset, the ROG Ally’s power advantage over the Steam Deck is undeniable, but the Asus machine struggles in other areas, most notably battery life. , which is the most criticized point. The ROG Ally has a battery similar to the LCD Steam Deck’s 40Wh battery capacity, but the power-hungry Z1 APU and Windows 11 operating system severely hinder its performance. The Steam Deck OLED’s larger battery has extended this life even further, and so Asus is back in the game.

After introducing the ROG Ally 2” and will instead incorporate user feedback into a refined version of the current Ally. The Ally X’s specs certainly show this, as the new model retains the AMD Z1 Extreme chip and 7-inch 1080p 120Hz IPS display from its predecessor. However, everything else has big changes, namely:

1. Battery capacity doubled (80Wh)
2. Storage capacity doubled from 512GB to 1TB
3. Faster 24GB LPDDR5X RAM
4. New SD card reader
5. Improved I/O with additional Thunderbolt 4 and USB-C ports
6. Brand new black color scheme
7. Asus has tweaked almost everything on the ROG Ally X

Validating the recently leaked specs of the Asus ROG Ally X, the storage capacity has also been doubled to a 1TB SSD and the Ally has been subtly redesigned for improved ergonomics, such as a more curved grip and fully upgraded controls with larger triggers, eight-way D-pad and joystick Modified module. The Ally X also has an updated cooling system with a smaller, quieter fan and more air vents. The new model is around 70g heavier than the base Ally model, but that’s a relatively small trade-off compared to the comprehensive upgrades on offer. Pre-orders are open for Ally X for 799 USD or about 20 million VND and is scheduled to launch on July 22.

Most importantly, however, Asus claims that the Ally X has a new SD card reader, which was a point of controversy surrounding the previous Ally model. According to reports from some owners, Ally’s SD card reader fails at a very high rate. This appears to have been fixed with Ally X but has not been properly verified. Asus will also offer a two-year increased warranty on all Ally X devices in North America to reduce customer support complaints. Like the Steam Deck OLED, the ROG Ally X focuses on incremental changes that make for a huge upgrade, making it a potentially more compelling gaming handheld.
